about

Gate to the Garden is another mythological metaphor.
In the creation story of Genesis, the garden is a place of unity. In the beginning Adam and Eve live peacefully in the garden with the other animals. Adam and Eve do not realize that they are separate. In the garden there are two trees, the tree of everlasting life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Once Adam and Eve eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the illusion of separateness begins. Man and woman see their nakedness. God casts them out of the garden. Now they are separate from God and the rest of the world. They must toil and fight against the earth for food and resources. There is now birth and death for human kind. It is only when we die, thus dying to form and ego, that we are let back in to the garden or heaven.

Gate to the Garden stems from this concept. In the beginning the heroin walks out of the garden of unity. First, she feels that she is alone, or separate, just as the Person in the creation story of the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. Along with this sense of separateness, this ego, comes fear and desire. When the heroin walks down to the river, she sees herself and falls in love. This is the reinforcement of the narcissistic ego.

When the heroine goes to pick flowers for herself, her reflection, she is then frightened by the wolves. The wolves are the creature of fear, as they threaten what the heroine loves most herself, the existence of her ego. Fear and desire are two sides to the same coin. Once you desire something, you fear it may be taken away.

After being chased by the wolves, the heroine realizes that the only way to escape her fear is to return to the garden. Just as the Buddha had to overcome his fears and desires to achieve enlightenment, the heroine had to shed her skin, or ego, to return to the garden- where all is impermanent and without an individual self.

lyrics

Lyrics:

She walked out
Out of the Garden
She felt afraid
She felt desire
But first, she felt, she was alone

She was disconnected
From the source from which all life flows
Illusions of duality
Create separate forms

She walked down
Down to the river
She looked in
Saw her own reflection
And then she fell
She fell in love

She was disconnected
From the source from which all life flows
Illusions of duality
Create separate forms
Me and you
Right and wrong
Man and nature
Man and God

She walked down to the valley
To pick some flowers for her watery love
And when the darkness of night
Fell upon the earth
She heard mystical howls
And the wolves, they came
And chased her away

She ran far from the scene
In circles, so it seemed
Out of sight and out of mind
And when she came to raise her head
She looked up at the gate

The gate, gate to the garden
Impenetrable as it was
She knew the secret
She shed her skin
And she walked back in

All is impermanent
All is with out a self

When she was back in the garden
She was no longer afraid
She felt no more desire
She was one with everything
