about
Like the term "god," "ego" is an ambiguous word and means different things to different people. In this song, I am referring to the ego as Andrew Cohen puts it, "The ego is the irrational compulsion to see oneself as being separate." What he means is that the ego gives us the illusion of separateness from the rest of the universe, hinders the development of our Authentic Self, and causes us to be narcissistic.
I love this statement from Cohen, "I believe that for most of us, the only solution to this evolutionary cul-de-sac (ego), the only way to our own higher development, lies in the context of human relationship, relationship based upon a breakthrough to a shared experience and recognition of consciousness beyond ego -- a consciousness in which all parties experience simultaneously their own individual and collective transparency while remaining fully and completely themselves. In this higher We consciousness, we recognize, perhaps for the first time, why ego is the only problem, the only obstacle to the fulfillment of our imminent evolutionary potential."
This definition of ego is not to be confused with the what gives us self-confidence, and self-worth, which makes us strive to achieve and succeed. As Cohen says, we must experience our individual transparency while fully remaining ourselves.
Sitting in a closed room and meditating for hours on end in hopes to transcend the ego, and get to nothing-ness is not the answer. It's good to meditate, but we must come back to reality, as meditating alone will not change the world. Being becomes. We must first experience pure being, then act from the unity consciousness we have realized. We must strive to achieve a balance of spirit, mind, and body, or as Ken Wilber puts it, the gross, subtle, and causal bodies.
lyrics
Lyrics:
I’m always having to
Tell my ego to
Shut the hell up
She’s always getting in the way
Trying to take
All the credit for
All of the creative things that
I’m involved with
Trying to impress
Everyone else
To feel good about herself
She doesn’t know
But I know
True validation
Doesn’t come from outside
It comes from within
And I am not my body
I’m not my mind
I’m only using them for a short time
My ego tries to get me to
Associate with my surroundings
With titles and stereotypes
And all kinds of material things
She’s her job, she’s her car, she’s her clothes
Her reflection in the mirror
She’s a singer, she’s a scholar
She’s a hippie, she’s a stoner
She’s a middle class daughter
She doesn’t know
But I know
True validation
Doesn’t come from outside
It comes from within
And I am not my body
I’m not my mind
I’m only using them for a short time
Mind, body, spirit
I need all three to be fit
Mind, body, spirit
I need all three for a higher
For a higher
Consciousness
And I’m gonna find the balance
I’m gonna find the balance
I’m gonna find the balance, the balance
I’m gonna find the balance
The spirit is the consciousness
That’s supposed to fuel the mind
The mind’s supposed to tell the body
What to do in time
But in this consciousless society
We’re living in
Time controls the body
And the ego mind with in
And the sprit’s just an echo on the wind
I’m always having to
Tell my ego to
Shut the hell up
